History of Underwear

Underwear has been around forever, sort of. Adam and Eve covered themselves with a fig leaf. So, many historians claim that the loin cloth was the first advent of underwear. However, the loin cloth does not go under, but it is the main garment itself.

It wasn't really until the middle ages, that underwear would be developed a little bit more. In the middle ages, trousers were developed and the typical long sleeve shirt (modern version still used today). The long sleeve shirt was worn as an undergarment.

During the latter 19th century long underwear became very popular for everyone. People lived amid harsh climates and did a lot of hard work outdoors. Long underwear would become a staple for people to use.

After the invention of the cotton gin, and many other fabrics the underwear business would boom. The whole process of booming began in the early 1900s and continues today.

Two notable things is that the jockey underwear style came about in the 1930s and boxers became popular around the 1940s.

Today, wool underwear is becoming the solid trend for people of active outdoor lifestyles. Merino wool has become standard, for underwear, because it is so fine and soft. Cotton thermal underwear is being replaced with fine wool underwear.

One of the most notable fabrics in underwear is Spandex (Elastomere). This stretchy material is combined with most fabrics to make them stretchy and hug the skin. This is a vital component of wool underwear.
